Expo Report:Raging Success… Except for My Forehead Wrinkles

The expo was a raging success with over 180 sign ups for American Mothers and Parents Television Council. I had 1 woman cry with gratitude that our booth was present amid the commercial booths. She said, “With an expo title like-WHAT WOMEN WANT-I’m glad that there is at least one booth promoting good rather than handbags, lipo and trendy clothes.” I got that response from many women (minus the tears of course). It was a wonderful event and I met so many great women!

An interesting part of my first day was introducing myself to the botox booth across the isle. They quickly let me know that my forehead wrinkles would use a little “work” or shall I say “injections”. “My forehead,” I replied? Prior to that moment I had been 100% completely and naively unaware that I even had forehead wrinkles. But… sure enough, next potty break I check out my forehead and indeed I’m am lined like school paper up there on my forehead. I wonder what other physical faults and failings I could have discovered had I gone to every booth! What do you think… time to cut bangs and hide my lined and wrinkled, botox needing forehead? Or just go back to joyful oblivion of not even noticing the new wrinkles that come each new year from an over abundance of smiling and enjoying life’s many blessings? Comments?

  1. Karmel–
Don’t you DARE botox your wrinkles (I never noticed you had any, by the way!). I admit I feel infuriated at the idea of booths made to make women feel inadequate and flawed! I too was so happy to see our booth with something of substance amid all the “fluff” offered at the Expo. One passerby called it “a lot of tinkling,” in reference to the scripture from Isaiah chapter 3 about “making a tinkling with their feet” and the worldliness of women. I was struck by the profundity of her comment. Thanks for all you do to promote motherhood and decency in our community! One woman certainly CAN make a difference!

Yesterday in Stake Conference Elder Uchdorf asked us to ponder two questions, the second of which was, “What are you doing to strengthen the traditional institution of marriage and family in your community?” or something to that effect. I AM PART OF AMI! I AM ACTIVE IN PROMOTING MOTHERHOOD AND CELEBRATING THOSE WHO CHOOSE IT!! I am doing something! YOU are doing something! Thank you for all you do!

Thursday is going to be SO GREAT!!

    Love, Ingrid

  2. Karmel,

Oh my goodness. When you mentioned the Expo, it sounded so wonderful but it sounds like it really was alot of fluff with one diamond among it. Don’t you dare Botox. All those years of smiles can had wrinkles and with each one a memory is etched right on that smiling face. You are beautiful and shame on an Expo for what women want making any woman feel inadequate in any way. We are all beautiful.

    Love,
    Ruth

  3. I too was there (not 2 days of 12 hours each like Karmel…but I was there for awhile). I couldn’t agree more with Ingrid. In fact, the Isaiah scripture also came to my mind. The expo atmosphere was quite disgusting. I’m sure that a lot of those women were fine, good women, but a lot of them, too were probably in their element. For those, I felt that it exposed their insecurities and it made fashion, beauty, and sex appeal seem quite silly. Those women are capable of so much more, and Karmel was there looking for those who are willing to explore their potential. I’m sure she found a few. Karmel: I didn’t notice the wrinkles in your forehead before…so what else matters.

  4. That last comment was from Brigham-I just logged in on Karmel’s computer.

  5. Don’t worry everyone… I’m not really concerned about my forehead wrinkles and not planning to botox! But I know you are all going to be checking out my forehead on Thursday night. I’ll be adding more wrinkle lines by smiling all night long!

  6. Wow. I am pretty sure that the church encourages women to look attractive. It gives you a boost to feel good about yourself and it is a little naive to think that makes you evil in some way.

There is a fine line between letting yourself feel beautiful or sexy and being insecure. I would think the opposite is true actually.

I do not think that this means run out and get botox (which you clearly do not intend to do anyway) but I think it very judgemental to put a label on women who want to look and feel good about themselves.

I think it is important as women to embrace your femine side and find the fashion that is right for you. There were a lot of options for women of all ages shapes and sizes backgrounds etc. at the show and I thought it was great.

Women have enough to worry about without being unfairly judged for shopping.

    Just a thought.

  8. I so enjoy reading these blogs…it makes one “OH” so careful as not to offend and keep an open mind ‘less we have walked in anothers footsteps. I enjoyed Amy’s comments and thought they were probably brought on from not only Karmel’s blogs, but from well meaning posts of friends after Karmel’s off the cuff humor toward botox…

God gave us two ears to listen to all comments and only one mouth to speak carefully, for so often we do not get the opportunity to have a 2nd chance to redeem ourselves from some unknowing and unmeaning insult.

We all see life a little differently when we enter and get involved in someone else’s world….and most often, only then can we see the good in everything, usually determined by the way our friends and family apply themselves to the issue. (Of course, anything can be exploited)

I love Abraham Lincoln’s quote:”…not how many years we have in our LIFE…but how we apply LIFE to the years we have!” Enjoy life and keep our minds open…not judging our fellow men and women.

Again…good comment AMY and good response KARMEL.

    Happy Day,
    G. Diny

  9. Karmel,
Thanks for letting me post that. My intention was not to call any one person judgemental just to remind people that there are a lot of ways to look at things and the best place to start is with ourselves.

I worked the booth accross from you at the Expo, so I am the blond that was selling undertease. I do not work for them, I am a writer, I was just helping out for the expo as a favor to the owner, my sister, since it was her wedding that weekend.

I thought you seemed pretty cool and I liked what you wrote about growing out your bangs, very excellent solution ;-)

But moving on, push ups are crazy hard! That is an awesome goal! I am trying to get into shape as well, so I feel your pain on that one! Best luck with that and all you are doing, you seem to have a nice balance and I think that is great.

Thanks again for allowing my comments and for your well thought out reply.

    All best,
    Amy Laurel
